The Homeless Also Need Drug Addiction
Counseling
Addiction Touches Every Social
Class
Drug and alcohol addiction crosses all social
barriers. It seems to hit especially hard on the
homeless. While drug or alcohol addiction is the root
cause of many addicts being homeless, there are also a large
percentage of people who are homeless through no cause of their
own. They turn to addictive substances as a method of
coping with their troubles. These people are in desperate
need of drug addiction counseling and since many cannot afford
to pay for it, there is always a need for free counseling.
Even Non-Addictive Homeless People Need Counseling
There are many homeless people who, while not addicts
themselves, have family and friends who are addicts.
These people need counseling on how to cope with the addict and
how to protect themselves from falling into the downward spiral
of addiction. Many children run away from home to escape
an abusive situation, and, with no money available, wind up
living on the street. With the proper counseling
available to them, they may be able to return to a normal life,
perhaps living with relatives or friends if the problems with
their parents cannot be resolved.
Distrust Of Strangers
Homeless people have to be wary and distrustful of other
people in order to survive on the street. Thus is takes a
long time for them to open themselves up to a social worker or
medical care specialist.
Free drug addiction counseling can help cross that barrier
by going into the addicts' territory, allowing them to come in
and seek help with no legal repercussions. This
counseling could be personal, one-on-one sessions with a
skilled professional or group sessions. Posters and
flyers can be distributed throughout the homeless community,
inviting everyone, whether or not they are addicts, to attend
and assuring them of their anonymity. These reassurances
can help convince someone to take that first frightening step
towards a normal life.
